Mud logging is surface drilling intelligence: returned mud, cuttings, gas, and rig parameters — interpreted in (or near) a field cabin while the bit is still making hole. It is not a synonym for LWD or MWD, and a “mud logging unit” without sensors, sample workflow, data handoff, and service scope is not a complete brief.

Separate mud logging from LWD and MWD

What a complete mud-logging brief covers
A useful RFQ is a system brief, not a cabin photo:
- Unit and workspace — land vs offshore, footprint, power, HVAC, communications, hazardous-area needs.
- Sensors and gas — drilling parameters, gas channels / ranges, sample points, alarms, interfaces.
- Sample and geology — cuttings collection, wash/describe, microscopy, lag depth, storage and reporting.
- Data and support — acquisition, displays, export formats, retention, remote support, spares, training, crew model.
If any of those four blocks is missing, quotes will compare apples to orange crates.

How the surface workflow actually moves data
At a high level:
- Cuttings leave the shale shaker → washed, described, lagged to bit depth.
- Sensors and gas systems sample circulating mud → total gas / chromatograph trends (as scoped).
- The cabin workstation time- and depth-aligns feeds → QA/QC and interpretation.
- Real-time plots and reports go to the wellsite / operations team in the agreed formats.
Depth correlation and lag matter as much as the chromatograph brand name. Put lag assumptions and sampling frequency in the RFQ.

Buyer checklist before you request a quote
Use this as a pre-quote gate:
- Scope of services — monitoring, lithology, gas, reporting deliverables named explicitly.
- Gas detection capability — total gas vs chromatograph, ranges, alarms (project needs — not marketing adjectives).
- Sampling frequency — cuttings interval, lag method, storage rules.
- Data formats — e.g. real-time handoff and log export expectations (state what your team actually opens).
- Crew and HSE — shift model, experience in similar wells, hazardous-area and site rules.
- Reporting SLA — who gets what, how often, and in which channel.

Mud logging is strongest when the drilling team cares about continuous surface evidence while making hole — gas trends, cuttings lithology, and parameter context — not when the only question is formation resistivity behind the bit.
