Condition: lock the operating envelope before you name a pipe
Before you write “GRE pipe” or “fiberglass line pipe” on a datasheet, write the duty. Incomplete envelopes produce wrong wall thickness, wrong resin exposure, and joints that fail at the first hydrotest.
Medium (fluid chemistry)
State composition, concentration, contaminants, dissolved gases (CO₂, H₂S), solids, pH, treatment chemicals, and cleaning or pigging fluids. Note multiphase cases and upset exposure. The layer that contacts the fluid—resin-rich barrier, liner, or structural laminate—must be compatible with that full list, not with a generic “corrosion resistant” claim.
Pressure
Give normal, maximum, and design pressure; surge or water-hammer; vacuum or external pressure if relevant; and whether duty is static or cyclic. Pressure class without temperature and cyclic basis is not a specification.
Temperature
Provide fluid and ambient minimum, normal, and maximum—including cleaning or upset cases. Published fiberglass walls are often established around a design temperature near 93°C, with higher service discussed case by case. Temperature derates allowable pressure; treat them as one envelope.
Layout and loads
Add diameter and length intent, burial or above-ground, support spans, anchors, thermal movement, settlement, and metallic transitions. A straight-pipe rating does not automatically cover fittings, bends, or field joints under those loads.

Engineering: map the envelope to pressure class and standard family
Oilfield fiberglass line pipe procurement usually lands in one of two API families. They are not interchangeable labels.

Do not merge rigid thermosetting fiberglass routes with spoolable thermoplastic (RTP / API 15S) language—those are different product forms.

Material: GRE vs FRP language, joints, and corrosion barrier
GRE, FRP, and GRP are families—not SKUs
- FRP = fiber-reinforced polymer/plastic (broad family).
- GRP = glass-reinforced plastic (glass reinforcement; resin must still be named).
- GRE = glass-reinforced epoxy (glass + epoxy matrix).

Corrosion barrier and liner
Ask which layer contains the fluid. Some constructions use a defined liner (for example, a thin resin-rich liner on threaded GRE constructions); others rely on a corrosion barrier integral to the laminate. Match that exposure surface to your medium list, including cleaning chemicals. “No steel corrosion” is not the same as “compatible with this fluid at this temperature.”
Joint family
Joints often control reliability more than the straight pipe:

- Adhesive-bonded / taper socket joints need surface prep, adhesive control, cure window, and hydrotest discipline.
